Present Day

Winter’s cell phone rang as she walked across the Meadow the next Friday on her way to Carmichael Hall after lunch.

“Hello?”

“Winter! Where are you?” It was Kaci.

“Um, headed back to the dorm. Why?”

Kaci spoke very fast. “Stop right where you are. I need you to do something.”

“What’s going on?” Winter asked.

“The AFRC is meeting with Dr. Streffield right now in Langley Hall,” Kaci said.

Winter turned. She stood beside Langley Hall now. “What do you want me to do?” she asked.

“Call everyone you can think of and have them meet us on the front steps of Langley.”

“Okay…why?”

“We’re going to have a silent protest,” Kaci said.

“A protest? Are you sure we should do that?” Winter’s mind wandered to her first experience at a “protest.” For a moment, she felt the stab of betrayal all over again.

“Of course. Can you make some calls or not?”

“Sure, I guess.”

“Good. I gotta go make some more calls myself. See you in a few minutes.” Kaci hung up before Winter could say anything else.

She didn’t have many numbers saved in her new phone, but she called the ones she had. Kaci or someone else had already contacted most of them, and several already waited at Langley Hall. Winter started around to the front of the building as she dialed the last number.

Kaci showed up not long after Winter, bringing about twenty other students. Most Winter recognized from either Carmichael or the CLC. There were at least ten others already waiting, and over the next few minutes about thirty more came. Some even thought to bring their Bibles. Everyone sat scattered on the steps. Kaci and Winter sat at the top next to a large marble column.

After only five minutes, a woman with graying hair in a bun, came out the front door. “You need to leave now, or I’m going to call security!”

Kaci stood. “This is a public building and we’re not causing any kind of disturbance.”

“If you don’t leave, security will make you!”

“We have a constitutional right to be here. You can’t legally make us go anywhere.”

The lady turned and stormed back inside. A growing crowd began to gather to watch.

“So what exactly are we trying to prove?” Winter asked.

“That we care…that’s all.”

“But what if we get in trouble?”

“Winter,” Kaci said, “there’s nothing they can do to us. We have a legal right to be here.”

“Yeah, but still…”

A concentration of black color drew her attention to a small group of Goth students accumulating to one side of the crowd. A premonition came over Winter.

Something was going to go wrong.

“Security’s here,” she said, relaying information from the premonition. Kaci nodded, and a few moments later the crowd confirmed it with a unified murmur.

“It’s okay, they can’t do anything,” said Kaci.

After making their way through the onlookers, the security guards stood at the bottom of the stairs, talking to themselves. The lady came out again, looking frustrated, and went back inside.

The arrival of the security guards brought with it a generous swelling of the crowd. A few minutes later, Winter heard police sirens in the distance.
